I'm not really asking for help with my voicemail, since I found an external solution, but the problem is a bit strange.  After someone leaves a voicemail, I call in to get my messages.  When the prompt asks for my pin number, the screen goes blank.  I can wait a few seconds and it comes back.  Then I tap the icon that says "keypad" and I can type 2 digits of my pin, then the screen goes blank when trying to hit the third digit.  It doesn't matter how long I wait to tap the third digit, the screen always goes blank.  It's almost as if someone is watching over my shoulder and laughing at me trying to get my pin entered without the screen going blank.

The solution I found was in a voicemail app.  It is called YouMail and it has several nice features - and the screen doesn't go blank when trying to type in my voicemail pin.

As a matter of interest are you using smart motions and what is your setting for the screen timeout.

In the past adjusting smart motions and call settings can resolve this issue.

Under display settings is smart stay on?
Under call settings is Auto Screen off during calls?

Pull up the phone app, where you have the dialler screen. Menu - Settings. Look for the auto screen function there.

The "auto screen off" has a check mark by it.  Should it be unchecked?

Ideally it should be 'checked' but try it with it 'unchecked' to see if it improves or cures your problem,

The proximity sensors for the screen are located at the top and just to the right of the ear piece at the top-front of the phone, make sure that they are not being covered while accessing in-call functions.

The auto check means that as soon as your flip your phone up towards you ear, it will automatically blank out as it tries to dial out. Gives you three options-
1) switch it off, but then screen will not blank out while talking - it also means that its possible your ear or side of face could touch the screen and hence open, close apps or even turn off a call (was a major issue on Android at one stage, so much so that the devs redesigned the dialer to put end call button elsewhere - until the some genius thought of just switching off the screen automatically.
2) Keep it on and when dialing out, try not to angle the phone upright, at the same time keep your face in view of the stay awake sensor.
3) You know what is causing it now, just live with it. Chaning dialer might assist.
